Make new friends …
We’re back in the USA.
It’s been quite a trip. We’ve made many new friends, from many places (I’ve counted over 50 countries). Most are appalled by what’s happening in our country, but don’t hold us personally responsible. We were always clear on who we were politically and it often put people at ease. Unfortunately it is partly because Trumpers don’t travel much we discovered and thus explains some of the incredible prejudice. One of my favorite lines was about the dangerous border we share with Canada that requires us to paddle canoes to cross!
We were crossing the Pacific with a boatload of Aussies when we heard their election result. They willingly suggested that it was a direct rejection of right-wing politics a la MAGA, which we heartily cheered. So there is some hope!
From Tahiti to Honolulu to Los Angeles we had more grey skies rough seas. We joined the cruise pop choir to help pass the time, but were too sick for the actual performance. Oh What A Night!
We’ve met wonderful people in our travels, but are very happy and excited to see our lifelong friends. We’re stopping in to see our west coast friends and family before heading home. Spending time in Topanga, amid the blossoming jasmine and bougainvillea, we were reminded of how fortunate we have been to have lived in that little piece of paradise.
We’re heading north through Berkeley, Eugene, and Portland, for short visits with family and friends as we don’t know when we will be back this way again. We’ll be heading out on a jet plane from Portland. Its been a long and wonderful almost 7 months that will take time to digest!
This is our goodbye post for this adventure. Our thanks to all who have followed along. You’ve kept us going many a time!
Looking Forward to being home and seeing you all!
Ellen and Steve
It was so lovely seeing you two, however briefly!
xo
When in Portland stop by the Powell’s on Hawthorne. Would love to see you both Nan
Thank you for taking your friends along. It has been an epic journey and I’m thrilled to have been able to access your descriptions and pictures. I wish you a leisurely, safe trip to Minnesota. We will welcome your return.
Can’t wait to see you both! It has been an amazing and remarkable and exhausting trip and I’m so proud of you! You kept me engaged the whole time (even if I wasn’t engaged with my own life). Sleep for a month in your own bed; don’t make any decisions and then start calling us as it works for you. Do you need a ride from the airport? I’m happy to pick you up whenever you need. See you soon. Marlene
